A Winter Wedding That Truly Felt Like Winter

This was my second to last winter wedding of the season, and Mother Nature made sure we didn’t forget it. We stepped outside for portraits determined to brave the cold, but with 0-degree temperatures working against us, it didn’t take long to realize it just wasn’t in our favor. Our fingers went from numb… to straight on fire in a matter of minutes. As much as I love a snowy winter backdrop, sometimes the best decision is knowing when to pivot.

So we did.

Indoor portraits can be incredibly magical but they can also be tricky, especially inside a church. Churches are meaningful and beautiful, but from a photography standpoint, they often come with limited natural light and visually busy backgrounds. Finding a clean, well-lit space that still feels elevated isn’t always easy. Thankfully, we found one small tucked away area that gave us the most perfect editorial vibe. Soft light. Clean lines. A quiet corner that felt intimate and refined.

And Sam and Sydney? Absolute naturals. They made the transition effortless. Their comfort in front of the camera allowed us to slow down, lean into the details, and create something that felt sophisticated and timeless.

These are, without a doubt, some of my favorite bridal portraits I’ve ever captured. There’s something about the closeness of indoor portraits, the subtle expressions, the intricate details, the way light wraps around a veil — that feels different.

More intimate.

More intentional.

More editorial.

The cold may have pushed us inside, but it also pushed us creatively.

The Beauty of Trusting the Process

If there’s one thing this winter wedding reminded me of, it’s this: sometimes the unexpected leads to something even better than the original plan. Wedding days are rarely about perfect conditions. They’re about adapting, trusting the process, and finding beauty wherever we are. Whether that’s braving the snow or discovering a hidden corner inside a church, there is always magic to be found.

And now? I might just be intentionally searching for a little tucked away indoor spot at every wedding from here on out.

Because sometimes Plan B becomes the most beautiful part of the story.
